This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, fertile soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

Compact, and hardier than most, ‘Kudos Mandarin’ has a look of tropical tangerine, with the scent of liquorice-mint, popular with more common bees and butterflies as well as hummingbirds that pollinate this Agastache in the wild. Both heat and drought tolerant once established, this nectar-rich herbaceous perennial produces an abundance of long-lived flowering spikes that last well a vase and look stunning as part of an ornamental grass or Mediterranean planting scheme using its fragrant, blue-green foliage to great effect.

  • Garden care: They can be short-lived, but are easily propagated by semi-ripe cuttings in early summer. Like many frost-hardy or borderline hardy plants they dislilke waterlogged conditions. Improve the drainage around the plant by incorporating organic matter especially on heavier soils. You may wish to leave the stems uncut over the winter as they provide seasonal interest and a food source for birds.
