This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial to full shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Ideal for adding leafy ground cover to dry, shady areas, this disease-resistant creeping perennial is primarily grown for its heart-shaped foliage, which is attractively laced with a network of pale green veins. It makes an ideal companion for ferns and other woodlanders, and the small, starburst-like flowers that rise above the foliage in summer offer further interest. The pod-like seedheads, which often appear in autumn after the flowers have faded, are also attractive.

  • Garden care: Apply a generous mulch around the base of the plant in spring or autumn, and divide over-large clumps in spring.
