Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg'
Japanese maple 'Trompenburg' (male)
Position: partial shade or full sunSoil: fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soilRate of growth: slow-growingHardiness: fully hardy
The purple-red leaves of this decorative Japanese maple have a delicate lustre, and the finger-like lobes tend to curl downwards, which gives them a rather elegant and delicate feel. Don't be fooled though, as 'Trompenburg' is said to be hardier than most, and as it does not get too big, it is ideal for most gardens - large or small.
Garden care: Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
