Begonia 'Martin Johnson'
begonia Martin Johnson
- Position: Light shade
- Soil: Well-drained potting compost
- Rate of growth: Average
- Hardiness: Frost tender (indoors only)
- Home care:Rex begonias require special care during the summer months. It's best to keep them in shaded areas and provide ample watering, ensuring proper drainage and maintaining a humid atmosphere around the plants. Avoid wetting the leaves or the crown.
As winter approaches, reduce the frequency of watering. Allow the compost surface to dry out before watering again. These begonias thrive with a minimum winter temperature of 13°C (55°F) across all varieties.
For optimal growth, feed them every two weeks from May to September using a high nitrogen fertiliser.
'Martin Johnson', is an award-winning leader of the pack, with very distinctive, jagged-edged, maple-shaped leaves with a slight spiral. The foliage of this rex-type begonia has a wine-red picotee edge, a metallic silvery-grey backdrop and a large purple-red blush that radiates gracefully along the veins.
