Cissus striata
parthenocissus ( syn. Parthenocissus striata )
- Position: bright, indirect light
- Soil: general-purpose potting compost
- Rate of growth: average to fast
- Hardiness: tender (indoors only)
- Current trailing length: approximately 20cm (+ or - 10% including the pot)
- Pot cover: choose a 14cm pot cover to give a good fit over the pot
A beautiful (and unusual) trailing house plant, with lax stems that are clothed in fully divided leaves, which radiate out from their stalks like lush green starbursts. It looks great when placed on top of a cupboard (or on a shelf), so the foliage can cascade down. - Home care: Originating from tropical regions, they like relatively stable temperatures (ideally above 15°C) and a well-lit position that does not get direct sunlight (think steamy jungle!). Water regularly in the growing season, making sure the compost gets dry to the touch before repeating the process, and cut back a little in winter. Often referred to as the sugar grape, they can produce lots of tiny beads of an (inedible) sugary substance on the foliage. This is completely harmless and can either be brushed or washed off.
