Sturdy stems of deep blue summer flowers, turning blue-purple with age, appear in early summer above rosettes of mid-green leaves.
Anchusa azurea 'Loddon Royalist' is a large blue alkanet that makes a striking and long-lasting statement in a sunny border and does not need staking. The flowers are attractive to bees, too.
How to care for Anchusa azurea Loddon Royalist:
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, ideally light or sandy, as they dislike wet or heavy conditions. They cope best in poorer soils so don't over fertilise as this will create foliage over flowers.
Water to establish but avoid overwatering. Deadhead after flowering to encourage a second flush, and cut stems back to the ground in early autumn to tidy the plant. Plants in exposed gardens may need staking for support.
