Pink, peony-form flowers, which have a light scent, appear from mid-winter to mid spring, adding colour to the garden at time when many other plants are completely dormant. Throughout the rest of the year, the glossy, dark-green leaves of this upright evergreen shrub will give structure and provide a lustrous backdrop to showy summer-flowering plants. A brilliant stand-alone specimen, it can also be used in a large shrub border or as part of an informal flowering hedge. Garden care: To prevent damage to the emerging buds and flowers protect from cold, dry winds and early morning sun. Water established plants in dry weather to prevent bud drop. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in mid-spring and again in June. Top-dress annually with shredded bark or well-rotted leaf mould. After flowering lightly trim or prune any branches that spoil the appearance of the plant.
