Enkianthus campanulatus

Renowned for its autumn colour, this spreading, deciduous shrub actually has two seasons of interest. In early summer it produces clusters of delicate, bell-shaped, cream to pink flowers with darker pink margins. In autumn, the oval, mid green leaves turn flaming shades of orange and red.
This pretty shrub is perfect for a shady, woodland edge and gives its most brilliant autumn display on acid soil.
How to care for Enkianthus campanulatus:
Plant Enkianthus in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained, acidic soil, ideally in a hole enriched with ericaceous compost. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of ericaceous compost or well-rotted leaf mould around the base in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first couple of years while it establishes. Little pruning is needed—just remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches after flowering, and avoid cutting into old wood as it may not resprout.
Fertilise sparingly with an ericaceous plant feed in spring if growth needs bolstering. Protect from harsh winter winds and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal problems.
