thyme - orange
orange-scented thyme
This herb dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun
- Soil: well-drained neutral to alkaline soil
- Rate of growth: average to fast
- Flowering period: June to July
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Used in both sweet and savoury dishes, this lovely variety is upright and slender with small, grey leaves infused with a strong orange scent and hint of balsam. Light pink-white flowers smother the tips in summer and are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Dried sprigs are also perfect to add to pot-pourri.
After flowering cut back hard using garden shears to retain a neat compact shape. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring.
