This pond plant is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its foliage in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose it all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Depth of water: 0-10cm (0-4in)
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Thriving at the water's edge, Veronica beccabunga emerges as a versatile aquatic perennial, boasting creeping hollow stems that root as they spread and typically evergreen, rounded fleshy leaves. From late spring to late summer, this British native species showcases short, upright spikes adorned with small, vibrant blue flowers, adding a splash of colour to water gardens and bog gardens. Serving as an excellent edging plant, its waxy, evergreen leaves persist through winter, enduring frosts and ice, providing essential winter interest to ponds. A useful and decorative marginal, not only to clear nutrients from the pond but also to offer surface cover, fostering wildlife and providing a protective habitat for newts to lay eggs and tadpoles to develop beneath its leafy canopy.

  • Garden care:
These plants are available potted up (using a suitable aquatic compost) into aquatic pots. These pots are made of a fine mesh, which allows water to circulate through the compost, providing the plants with both oxygen and nutrients. If you are using them as a aquatic plant, they can be planted up to a water covering of 10cm (4in) deep. For planting at or above the waterline, choose our 9cm pots for planting in boggy, reliably damp soils. Little to no maintenance required except to check growth where undesired.
