A good hori-hori is a tool you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again. The word ‘hori’ means ‘to dig’ in Japanese, and tools like these have been in use in Japan since the Middle Ages. Quite an impressive pedigree!

It functions as a knife, saw and digging tool in one. The razor sharp blade has straight and serrated edges so you can use it to both slice and saw. Great for weeding, cutting through tangled clumps of roots, hard soil, and even the odd bit of pruning.

The blade is curved rather than flat so it’s good for working in circles. Use it to loosen and remove plants from their pots and dig holes for planting out (the cm and inch markings on the blade will help you measure the depth).

Made from stainless steel with an ash wood grip, it comes with a canvas sheath so you can keep it to hand on your waistband.
