Seasonal jobs for the month: April

1. Sweet peas can be direct-sown now, to produce plants that flower later than those seedlings sown earlier under glass or overwintered.  
2. Plant summer flowering bulbs, corms and tuberous plants including Dahlia and Gladious directly into border soil or containers.  
3. Plant evergreen trees, shrubs and hedges. Spring is also a good time to move evergreens.  
4. Look out for early aphid attacks: prompt treatment reduces numbers and helps prevent colonies establishing.  
5. Stake perennials and finish mulching before the plants put on too much growth..
