Seasonal jobs for the month: March

1. Shorten stems of Buddleja davidii to within two to three pairs of healthy buds, as it flowers on new wood  
2. Promote growth of new fruiting wood on established blueberry bushes by removing up to a third of the oldest stems close to ground level.  
3. Mulch beds and borders with organic matter such as garden compost or well rooted manure to improve soil moisture retention.  
4. In milder regions start planting early potatoes. Protect the growth from frost.  
5. Move evergreen shrubs and plant evergreen hedging plants such as yew and holly.  
6. Prune previous season's growth on Hydrangeo paniculata to the lowest pair of strong buds for larger flowers on strong stems.
