Primula acaulis Burgundy (Queen Series)
primrose
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: partial shade
- Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, or general-purpose potting compost for containers
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: February to April
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Edged with a delicate, pencil-thin silvery-white line on each of the petals, this sumptuous, intensely wine-red coloured double-flowered primrose, with a golden centre, is long-lasting and sits beautifully above a foil of bright green leaves. Enjoy as a potted specimen indoors or perhaps combined with early spring flowering bulbs for an eye-catching display in the garden.
Plant out in a partially shaded and sheltered position, adding plenty of leaf mould and compost to the planting hole and backfill. Water well until established. Divide large clumps in late spring or early summer after the plant has flowered, preferably during a wet spell.
