  • A remarkable rex-begonia with medium sized, basaltic greenish black leaves from which interveinal patches of lava red erupt. The leaf underside is also red, and has evolved to take advantage of reflected sunlight at longer wavelengths striking the dense forest floors of its tropical rainforest habitat. • Home care:
Rex begonias require special care during the summer months. It's best to keep them in shaded areas and provide ample watering, ensuring proper drainage and maintaining a humid atmosphere around the plants. Avoid wetting the leaves or the crown.

As winter approaches, reduce the frequency of watering. Allow the compost surface to dry out before watering again. These begonias thrive with a minimum winter temperature of 13°C (55°F) across all varieties.

For optimal growth, feed them every two weeks from May to September using a high nitrogen fertiliser.
