  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: March
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Betula nigra is a rapidly growing deciduous tree with a conical shape and shaggy bark that peels in layers, transitioning from pinkish-orange to brown, blackish, or grey-white on older trees. In early spring, yellow-brown male catkins, up to 8cm (3in) long appear. Complemented by glossy green diamond-shaped leaves turning vibrant yellow in autumn, the tree offers a visually striking display. The black birch excels in wet soils and adapts well to urban conditions, its versatility makes it a wise choice for planting schemes in the warming climate.

  • Garden care:
Birches dont need much pruning, but you may want to remove any diseased or crossing branches. It is essential that any pruning work is carried out between late summer to mid winter as the sap will 'bleed' heavily at other times. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting and stake well.
