This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  Unlike most of the other clematis, this compact, non-climbing form creates a leafy mound, which over a long period from late spring, is topped with showy violet flowers. It's ideal for spilling over the edges of a pot or hanging basket, but it can also be used to soften the edges of a border - or add some long-lasting colour to a rockery.
  
  
• Garden care: In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
