This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, or general-purpose compost for containers
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: half hardy (may need winter protection)

This dahlia ‘bedding’ plant, characterised by almost black, dissected foliage, provides a striking contrast that enhances the vibrancy of its bright flowers. Featuring a well-branched habit, it is particularly well-suited for container gardening. Bushy, clump-forming, and tuberous, this perennial boasts dark purple-black serrated leaves, complemented by dark flower stems with single, textured fuchsia pink flowers, adorned with golden yellow centres. A versatile and long flowering plant choice, ‘Happy Days Fuchsia Halo’ thrives both in the middle of a flower border and in pots or containers, adding visual appeal to various garden settings.

  • Garden care:
Protect under glass or in a frost-free, sheltered location until risk of frost has passed, then plant out or pot up into larger containers. While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. In mild areas, leave them in situ over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch. In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.
