This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

    Sought after by florists because of their longevity in the vase, the frothy clouds of (larger than average), double white flowers appear from July to August and slender, grey-green leaves. This pretty perennial is perfect towards the back of a sunny herbaceous or mixed border with light, sharply drained, alkaline soil. Chose a site sheltered from cold, drying winds and support with twiggy pea-sticks well before the flowers of 'Bristol Fairy' appear.

  • Garden care: When planting 'Bristol Fairy' incorporate some well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole and surrounding area. Stake using plant supports made from natural materials (e.g. hazel or birch) before the flowers appear. Cut back the stems after flowering. Add a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the plant in spring. Once established, lift and divide congested plants in spring.
