This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, including chalk, enriched with leaf mould or a loam-based potting compost such as John Innes no. 2
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

An elegant addition to the patio or border, the large trumpet-shaped flowers of this compact, species lily have a strong and delicious perfume - so for best effect try to plant it near a seating area, open window or pathway. Appearing singly, or sometimes in small clusters, the pink-flushed white flowers are also ideal for cutting, and will usually last well in the vase.

  • Garden care: Try to plant it in a sunny spot where the roots are shaded, in freely draining soil that has been enriched with organic matter. Deadhead the faded blooms promptly and cut the dead stems back to ground level at the end of autumn.
  • Cats: TOXIC if eaten
