This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: light, freely draining soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This new statice is the first of its kind, and as it is hardier than other forms, it can be left outside throughout the year in milder regions. Forming a basal rosette of rich green foliage, it's crowned in summer with impressive sprays of small lilac-purple flowers, which are loved by bees and other pollinators. The flowers are also incredibly long-lasting, so they're ideal for both fresh or dried arrangements.

  • Garden care: After the flowers have faded, cut back the stems to their base (if you have not already cut them for the vase). Apply a generous layer of insulating mulch around the crown in autumn and avoid overwatering in winter.
