This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun to lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: frost hardy to -5 (may need winter protection)

'Lake Como' bears sturdy branching well-filled flower spikes, attracting both bees and butterflies with its resilient and abundant lavender-blue blooms. A greggii salvia, this herbaceous perennial features shiny, aromatic dark green foliage complementing its impressive flowers and is deal for sheltered, sunny borders or containers in well-drained soil or compost, standing out as a remarkable companion choice to other late summer cottage garden favourites.

  • Garden care:
Plant Salvia 'Lake Como' with a handful of well-rotted compost or manure in the planting hole. To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring.
