This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: cool, moist, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Flowering period: May to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The deeply lobed green leaves create a somewhat lacy effect, and each is irregularly threaded or blotched with burgundy. Then, in spring and early summer, burgundy-flushed stems bearing cone-shaped clusters of tight, pink buds are jettisoned, before opening to masses of tiny white, star-shaped flowers. 'Pink Skyrocket' makes a sublime ground-cover for partially shaded position, and looks best when planted in naturalised drifts and allowed to meander.

  • Garden care: Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before planting. For best results, it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather. Removing the faded blooms regularly will prolong flowering and encourage more to come. Cut back and compost the spent flower stems in autumn and apply a dry mulch around the crown of the plant to protect against frost damage.
