Ideal for pond margins or reliably boggy soils, Typha gracilis emerges as a relatively compact and graceful variety of reedmace, boasting slender green leaves and light brown, sausage-shaped seed heads that add winter interest to aquatic landscapes. Unlike its larger counterparts, it exhibits a more refined stature, making it suitable for areas where height is a concern. Although less vigorous, it's still advisable to trim the seed heads in late winter to prevent unwanted seeding. With its narrow leaves and captivating half-green, half-gold flower spikes that mature into brown bullrush heads, this marginal plant thrives in clay-bottomed ponds, streams, and lakes, basking in full sun to partial shade, and offering a naturalistic touch to aquatic environments.
These plants are available potted up (using a suitable aquatic compost) into aquatic pots. These pots are made of a fine mesh, which allows water to circulate through the compost, providing the plants with both oxygen and nutrients. If you are using them as a aquatic plant, they can be planted up to a water covering of 25cm (10in) deep. While its attractive seed heads may be left all winter if desired, it's best to clear them if they fall into the water to prevent any self-seeding.
