This winter beauty produces abundant double flowers packed with frilly, ruffled orange petals dramatically streaked with black whiskers, with the added bonus of bearing a delightfully sweet scent. Though technically a perennial, this compact viola is more commonly cultivated as an annual, thriving in containers and garden beds to furnish striking colour through the darkest months. In addition, the edible flowers make cheerful, face-like garnishes for salads.
Plant out in compost or well-drained, humus-rich soil that is not frozen or prone to waterlogging. Protect young plants from slug damage using environmentally friendly slug pellets or beer traps. Deadhead the spent blooms to prolong flowering.
