Clematis 'Vera'
clematis (group 1) (syn. Clematis montana Vera)
This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
- Position: Full sun or partial shade
- Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil
- Rate of growth: Fast
- Flowering period: April to May
- Hardiness: Fully hardy
This robust deciduous climber astounds with its prolific, large saucer-shaped deep pink flowers up to 7cm (3in) across. Adorned with a mass of yellow stamens, these blooms waft their vanilla-scented mid-pink blooms while the emerging bronze-tinged new leaves complement their beauty. Growing to impressive heights, ‘Vera’ is a vigorous climber and an excellent choice for swiftly dressing walls and pergolas, offering a delightful visual spectacle to any garden space.
Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
- Humans: Skin irritant; Pets: Harmful if eaten
