An impressive addition to pots and gravel gardens, this handsome sedge forms a dense, arching mound of orange-green foliage, which in summer is topped with flowerspikes that become taller as the season progresses. The foliage of Carex 'Prairie Fire' is the real star however, and as it's evergreen, it's invaluable for adding warmth and colour to the garden during the winter months.

  • Garden care:
  • 'Prairie Fire' is easy to grow in most well-drained, fertile soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, avoiding extremes of wet and dry, especially during warm weather. This ornamental grass requires minimal feeding; a light application of balanced feed in spring is sufficient. Hand ‘comb’ old foliage in late winter to early spring to encourage new growth and maintain its vibrant colour. While relatively low-maintenance, it will not tolerate excessively wet winter ground conditions.
