The award-winning ‘Karaten’ is a stunning conical to columnar evergreen tree with scaly, grey bark and orange-brown shoots. The needles are stiff, pointed, bluish grey-green, curving upwards and coated in a natural, protective wax. This Colorado spruce has an ultimate spread of 5m so will need plenty of space and will suit medium to larger gardens.

  • Garden care:
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and of the same depth and backfill with plenty of organic matter (composted pine needles or ericaceous compost are good subsitutes). After planting, water the tree deeply and continue to water regularly during the first growing season to establish a robust root system. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, but keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot. Prune dead or damaged branches as needed, and ensure the tree has good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Remove any competing leaders that appear in spring, and at the same time, cut out any weak or misshapen shoots.
