This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: well-drained, moderately fertile, neutral to slightly acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Velvety, violet flowers with veined yellow throats appear in May and June, contrasting beautifully with the bright green, slender, strappy leaves. As a clump-forming plant, this Siberian flag iris needs space to spread out and thrives in moist, neutral to slightly acidic soil, in either sun or partial shade. Planting 'Tropic Night' in bold drifts beside water allows this hardy perennial to naturalise, creating a stunning display. Particularly useful on difficult banks, it helps prevent erosion and eventually forms large clumps, and additionally, can be grown in a pot.

  • Garden care:
Plant in soil that has been improved with well-rotted manure or garden compost and do not allow to dry out, particularly as the plant is getting established. If grown in a container, it will need dividing and repotting every couple of years in spring. Remove the stems after flowering from the base as this will concentrate the plant's energy into producing new rhizomes. Divide and replant about every three years.
    • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
