Picea pungens (Glauca Group) 'Hoopsii'
Colorado spruce
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: moist, well-drained neutral to slightly acid
- Rate of growth: slow
- Hardiness: fully hardy
A beautiful, compact, blue spruce that would make an excellent specimen tree for a winter border or lawn surrounding bed, ‘Hoopsii' develops into a conifer of narrowly conical growth. The dense needles are silvery-blue, almost as though they carry a layer of frost all year round, making this a perfect evergreen foil for other winter interest plantings such as colourful dogwoods and scented viburnums. - Garden care: Remove any competing leaders that appear in spring, and at the same time, cut out any weak or misshapen shoots.
