A substantial deciduous shrub or tree, boasting wide, rough, mid-green leaves. Late winter to early spring sees the appearance of hanging yellow/brown catkins, followed by clusters of large, rounded, edible nuts in autumn. These nuts are not only excellent for direct consumption but also fare well in various culinary applications. The tree is a robust cropper, and its kernels delectable for several years, provided they are stored correctly. While 'Webb's Prize Cob' is partially self-fertile and can produce nuts independently, its yield is significantly enhanced when cross-pollinated with a different cobnut.
Bare-root plants should be planted out as soon as they arrive. If this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily (covering their roots with soil) or potted up. Before planting, soak the rootball in a bucket of water for half an hour and make sure to incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole. Cut out dead, diseased and damaged wood in March and apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant.
