Blechnum chilense
Chile blechnum
- Position: partial or full shade
- Soil: moist, but well-drained
- Rate of growth: average
- Hardiness: fully hardy
An imposingly elegant fern, with matt-green, lance-shaped, leathery fronds, and a handsome habit. Originating from the damp woodlands of Chile, this award-winning hard fern is hard to ignore. Although evergreen, the winter-weary fronds can be cut down in spring to reveal fresh new growth. Worth considering either planted as a group or singly for dramatic effect, alongside other woodland dwellers. - Garden care: Plant Chile blechnum by incorporating well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole. Dead or damaged fronds may be removed entirely prior to new fronds unfurling in spring.
