Thriving in neutral to acid soils, this majestic and award winning architectural palm stands tall, reaching over 15m in the wild with a stout trunk and lush, 5m (15ft) long leaves. Its cascading creamy-yellow flowers transform into striking reddish-yellow fruits, creating a breathtaking display while its spiky ‘feather-shaped’ leaves unfold into elegant fan shapes. Hardy in southerly and coastal regions of the UK (down to -5°C) and RHS Award-winning, Phoenix canariensis adapts to sheltered British landscapes, reaching 1.5m (5ft) in containers or a towering 5m (15ft) with a 3m (9ft) spread in open ground, lending instant tropical appeal to large patios or plots.

  • Garden care:
Grow Phoenix canariensis in a spacious pot on a sunny patio or in a sheltered, sunny border to enhance your tropical planting scheme. Feed with a diluted fertiliser every three months throughout the growing season and trim brown fronds as needed. Safeguard it from harsh winter weather by either bringing it indoors or wrapping the fronds around the crown. New growth emerges from the plant's center in summer. When outer leaves turn brown, carefully remove them from the base, using secateurs or loppers. Exercise caution while handling the fronds due to their spines.
