Baptisia australis
false indigo
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun
- Soil: well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: April to June
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Upright spikes of mauve to dark indigo-blue, pea-like flowers in June, often flecked white or cream. False indigo is perfect for a well-drained border or a dry, sunny bank. Resist the temptation to cut the plant back in autumn since the seed-pods and slender stems look wonderful frosted in the winter garden. - Garden care: Drought tolerant once established, however keep new plants well watered. Lift and divide large colonies in early spring.
