Award-winning conifer collection
RHS AGM award-winning conifer collection
- Position: Full sun to partial shade
- Hardiness: Fully hardy
A collection of award-winning (RHS) colourful, evergreen conifers chosen for all year round interest and excellent horticultural characteristics.
This awarding winning conifer collection contains one each of the following varieties, each supplied in a 9cm nursery pot:
- Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star': Dense, spreading branches of attractive, aromatic, silvery-blue leaves and oval, black cones. This low-growing, compact, evergreen shrub is a valuable ground cover plant for a well-drained border or rockery. Grows to 40cm tall.
- Juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Old Gold': Spreading stems are clothed in aromatic bronze-flushed yellow foliage, which holds its colour well throughout the year. Ideal to use as a specimen plant, it will slowly form a handsome, flat-topped shrub that looks great when planted with rounded and more upright conifers. Grows up to 1m tall.
- Juniperus horizontalis 'Green Carpet': Short, dense, plume-like branches of aromatic, steely-blue leaves and ovoid, dark blue cones. This creeping juniper is an excellent ground cover plant for a well-drained shrub or mixed border. Perfect for softening the edges of paths and driveways, the handsome, steely-blue foliage takes on purple tints in winter. Grows to 30cm tall.
- Thuja occidentalis 'Danica': Slowly forming a rounded dome of bright, emerald green foliage, which takes on a bronze flush in colder temperatures, this dwarf conifer will provide an interesting silhouette throughout the year. Where space is limited it can be grown in a pot, but if your borders are large enough try dotting it at intervals along their length. Grows to 50cm tall.
- Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd': An excellent feature plant for a pot, or for adding structural interest to a mixed border. This evergreen conifer will hold its compact, conical shape well throughout the year and can be planted side by side to create a low screen or hedge. Alternatively, simply use it as a stand-alone feature. Grows to 1m tall.
- Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow': Dense, ascending branches of long, pointed, aromatic, steel-blue leaves form a narrow, pencil-shaped plant that is valuable for adding structure and punctuating a planting scheme. Planted in groups of three, it's particularly useful for introducing a feeling of formality into the landscape. Tolerates dry, chalky and sandy soils. Grows to 2m tall.
Wearing gardening gloves trim, if necessary, in spring and again in late summer to maintain a neat shape.
