Pinus mugo subsp. mugo
mountain pine (syn. mugus)
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained acid soil or ericaceous compost
- Rate of growth: slow
- Hardiness: fully hardy
‘Mughus’ is a slow-growing, cushion-shaped evergreen pine with dark-green needles. It can be used to great effect in the garden as an accent plant or to provide scale to other coniferous or deciduous plantings.
Pruning is not usually necessary, however any shoots that ruin the symmetry of the plant can be removed in autumn. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown) in late winter.
