Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln Gold' (PBR)
Chinese fountain grass
This grass dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun
- Soil: light, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering month: July to September
- Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection in cold areas)
In spring, the fresh new foliage of this eye-catching grass emerges a bright golden yellow, but as the seasons progress and the temperatures rise, it softens to lemon-green. Intially quite upright, the foliage becomes more arching as it ages, and the tussock-like clumps are topped from midsummer with fluffy flowerspikes, which are often retained well into autumn. It makes a great addition to a sunny patio, low mantenance border or sensory garden. - Garden care: Comb through the plant in late winter to remove dead foliage. Feed with a general purpose fertiliser during the growing season and if necessary, lift and divide over-large clumps in early spring.
