This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: well-drained, moderately fertile soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

For centuries this pretty herb has been widely cultivated for its medicinal uses, however its ornamental value alone makes it a worthy addition to mixed borders or patio pots. The reddish-purple, pink or blush-white flowers are rich in nectar, and they often appear throughout the summer, attracting bees and other pollinators in their droves.

  • Garden care: In autumn, sow 1cm deep into a well prepared seedbed and after the cold weather, the warmer temperatures in spring should trigger germination. Alternatively, sow indoors in spring into covered seed trays and before placing them in the fridge for 2-3 weeks to cold stratify. Move to a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and when large enough to handle, grow on in individual pots, gradually acclimatising before planting out. When in growth, removing the spent flowers will encourage more to form and a light trim after flowering will help keep the plant tidy. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring.

  • Sow: March to June or September to November

  • Approximate quantity: 150 seeds
