Lonicera periclymenum 'Sweet Sue'
honeysuckle
This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained
- Rate of growth: fast growing
- Flowering period: June to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
A relatively compact form of the much-loved honeysuckle, 'Sweet Sue' is ideal for smaller gardens, and can flourish (if kept well fed and watered) in a large pot. It starts producing its creamy-white flowers in early summer, and these fill the air with their deliciously sweet perfume, while gradually turning a deeper, golden yellow as they age. A cottage garden classic. - Garden care: Cut back over-large plants after flowering, removing a third of the flowering shoots. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in early spring.
- Humans/Pets: Fruit are ornamental - not to be eaten
