Pontederia cordata
pickerel weed
This pond plant dies right back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun
- Depth of water: 10-12cm
- Rate of growth: fast-growing
- Flowering period: July to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
This handsome aquatic perennial is perfect as a marginal plant for a sunny pond. It has large, lustrous leaves and in late summer closely packed blue flowerspikes. A valuable addition to shallow water, it will provide colour and interest long after many of the other aquatics have finished flowering. It is best grown in aquatic planting baskets filled with fertile, loamy soil in 10-12cm of water. - Garden care: Contain in an aquatic planting basket lined with hessian. Before planting apply a 2.5cm top-dressing of pea shingle or gravel to prevent the top layer of the planting medium from clouding the water.
- CAUTION toxic if eaten/skin & eye irritant
