Clematis koreana Amber ('Wit141205') (PBR)
RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2016 - clematis (group 1)
This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil
- Rate of growth: fast-growing
- Flowering period: May to July, and usually again in September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
There was some pretty stiff competition, but this lovely clematis was voted the winner of the coveted RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2016. The judges loved the soft yellow flowerheads, which sometimes have a faint pink blush to the edges of the pointed sepals. These nodding gems appear over a relatively long period too - usually from early to midsummer, and then with a second flush in early autumn. It's not too big, so is perfect for training up an obelisk, and can even be grown in a large patio pot. - Garden care: No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
- Humans: Skin irritant; Pets: Harmful if eaten
