Clematis cirrhosa 'Ourika Valley'
clematis (group 1)
- Position: Full sun or partial shade
- Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil
- Rate of growth: Fast
- Flowering period: November to February
- Hardiness: Fully hardy
Glossy evergreen foliage offers the perfect backdrop for the prolific display of open bell-shaped, cream flowers, which appear from late-autumn to late-winter. Afterwards attractive seed heads develop, providing further interest for several months. Choose 'Ourika Valley' for winter colour, scrambling through bare branches or happily weaving its merry way through trellises and climbing supports.
Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
- Humans: Skin irritant; Pets: Harmful if eaten
