Helleborus × hybridus 'Tutu'
hellebore
This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: partial shade
- Soil: neutral to alkaline, freely draining soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: January to February
- Hardiness: fully hardy
An elegant, semi-evergreen perennial that brings a touch of elegance and sophistication to a shady spot. This stunning plant boasts large, delicate, pink flowers with dark pink-red semi-double anemone-centres that bloom in early spring, fade and then persist for months. Its mid-green, glossy leaves are beautifully textured and offer a great backdrop for the gorgeous blooms. With its compact growth habit, low maintenance requirements and ability to thrive in shade, ‘Tutu' is a must-have for any woodland garden. - Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter to the planting hole. Cut the old leaves back down to the ground in January or February as this will show off the new emerging flowers to best effect. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant in autumn and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.
