This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: cool shade or partial shade
  • Soil: prefers humus-rich soils which do not dry out in summer
  • Rate of growth: slow initially but with good spreading capacity
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Deep purple flowers with a white eye emerge in early-to-mid-summer. 'Harvington Evening Star', bred and named by Hugh and Liz Nunn at Harvington near Evesham, is a tuberous perennial, with broad, upright, green leaves.

  • Garden care: Incorporate plenty of organic matter and add some mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) when planting. In very cold areas apply a dry winter mulch such as bark.
