Muehlenbeckia complexa Hippie Chick ('VH') (PBR)

maidenhair vine

Product Image
Lively and full of character, this deciduous scrambler, which can be semi-evergreen in milder winters, brings instant texture wherever it’s planted, weaving a dense mat or meandering happily through other plants. Slender, inky-dark stems carry a mass of tiny leaves, each one uniquely shaped and softly splashed with cream, green and warm pink tones that deepen in cooler weather, giving long-lasting visual interest.

In late summer and early autumn, subtle greenish-white flowers appear, and on female plants these are followed by neat white fruits that sit above the foliage into September. Its flexible habit makes it ideal for spilling from containers, softening hard landscaping, or forming excellent ground cover that quickly knits together.

Easy-going and adaptable, Muehlenbeckia complexa ‘Hippie Chick’ thrives in sun or light shade and rewards minimal effort, once established, with year-round structure, making it a practical yet playful choice for modern gardens, patios and balconies.

How to care for Muehlenbeckia complexa Hippie Chick ('VH') (PBR):

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Find a spot where it is sheltered from cold, drying winds, and provide support if you would like it to climb. No routine pruning is required unless it outgrows its allotted space, in which case it should be trimmed back immediately after flowering.
