pomegranate 'Provence'

Product Image
This self-fertile, Mediterranean beauty boasts glossy foliage and vibrant, funnel-shaped orange flowers, gracing sunny, sheltered spots throughout summer. The leathery-skinned, brown fruits, forming at the flower base, ripen during mild autumns, ready for harvest in October and November. Borderline hardy in the UK, 'Provence' adapts by thriving in large containers, easily movable to warmer positions during winter in colder areas. Find a nice sunny, sheltered spot against a south facing wall to encourage fruit production and ripening - you could make pomegranate juice or if you’re feeling adventurous…molasses!

How to care for pomegranate Provence:

Grow pomegranates in the UK in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot, ideally against a south-facing wall or in a large pot that can be moved for protection. Use a free-draining compost, such as a loam-based mix with added grit, and choose a pot with good drainage holes. Position the plant where it gets maximum heat and sun, as this encourages flowering and fruiting. Water regularly through spring and summer, allowing the top of the compost to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce watering in winter. Feed with a balanced organic fertiliser in November and again in March to support steady growth.

You can grow the plant to form a small tree or train it as a compact wall shrub. Prune outdoor plants in spring, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and take out suckers from the base. Indoor or conservatory-grown plants are best pruned in early winter when growth slows. In colder areas, move potted plants into an unheated greenhouse or porch over winter to keep them dry and frost-free.
