Rhododendron cilpinense

rhododendron

Product Image
A compact evergreen shrub with a rounded habit, this species produces masses of soft pink, funnel-shaped flowers from rosy buds in late winter to early spring, often before many other plants are in bloom. The display almost covers the neat mound of small, glossy green leaves, making it a valuable source of early colour. Flowers measure up to 8cm (3in) across and open freely, giving a striking effect despite the plant’s modest size.

Rhododendron cilpinense performs best in humus-rich, acidic soil with reliable moisture and good drainage, and prefers a sheltered position where the blooms are protected from frost damage. Suitable for mixed borders, smaller gardens, or a sunny rock garden, its manageable growth makes it easy to place in a variety of settings.

How to care for Rhododendron cilpinense:

When planting, avoid planting too deeply, and incorporate well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole, adding some mycorrhizal fungi to aid root establishment. Rhododendrons prefer an acid soil or ericaceous compost that is well-draining.

Remove spent flower heads regularly to encourage prolonged flowering. In late autumn, after flowering has finished, cut back any dead or damaged growth to maintain a tidy shape. In early spring, prune lightly to remove any winter-damaged stems and to promote strong, healthy new growth.

Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould around the base of the plant each spring. Protect from strong winter winds.
