Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Cherry Lace ('Hyfjolais')

black elder (syn. Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Hyfjolais')

Product Image
This compact deciduous shrub boasts deeply divided, dark burgundy foliage with hints of cherry-red, adding bold texture and colour to gardens. In early summer, it produces eye-catching clusters of creamy pink flowers that attract bees and butterflies. By late summer, these flowers develop into glossy black elderberries, which are popular with wildlife or for making syrups and jams.

Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Cherry Lace grows to just 1.5m (5ft), making it perfect for smaller gardens, large containers, or mixed borders. Thriving in sun or partial shade, it is easy to maintain and drought-tolerant once established, combining ornamental beauty with practical versatility.

Please note that the pot in the photograph is not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a simple nursery alternative), but we have a wide and wonderful range on our website to choose from.

How to care for Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Cherry Lace ('Hyfjolais'):

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year to help the plant establish.

For the best foliage display, cut the plant back to ground level, following its second year after planting, in early spring before new growth begins. This encourages fresh, vibrant leaves throughout the growing season.

After pruning, apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrients.
