Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Laced Up ('Snr1292')

black elder (syn. Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Snr1292')

Product Image
This upright, ornamental elder stands out for its narrow, vertical habit and finely cut, deep purple-black foliage. Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Laced Up offers the ornamental appeal of 'Black Lace' but with a much smaller footprint, making it ideal for tighter spaces or small gardens.

In summer, clusters of soft pink flowers provide strong contrast against the dark leaves. These blooms may develop into berries if another compatible elder is grown nearby. Low maintenance and adaptable, it tolerates a range of soils and aspects and provides a strong archirectural planting presence in borders.

How to care for Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Laced Up ('Snr1292'):

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year to help the plant establish.

For the best foliage display, cut the plant back to ground level, following its second year after planting, in early spring before new growth begins. This encourages fresh, vibrant leaves throughout the growing season.

After pruning, apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrients.
