Shiitake mushrooms

Product Image
Grow your own Shiitake Mushrooms with our ready to grow, large 'no fills' kit. Our kits give you all you need to grow and harvest your own crop of edible fungi within just two weeks of opening. Perfect as gifts for non-green-fingered enthusiasts and cooks alike!

Your Shiitake Mushroom Kit will need to be chilled in a fridge when you receive it, if you are not intending to grow straight away. Your kit will be fine out of the fridge for a day or two if gifting or while in transit.

Shiitake Mushrooms are easy to grow, and have a rich, savoury flavour often described as earthy, smoky, and slightly meaty, with a hint of garlic-like undertones. They develop a deeper, umami taste when cooked, making them popular in many Asian dishes, soups, stir-fries, and sauces. Shiitakes are not just flavourful but also known for their health benefits. They are a good source of vitamins, particularly B vitamins, and minerals like selenium. Additionally, they contain compounds believed to support immune function, reduce inflammation, and even offer potential cholesterol-lowering properties.

Keep your kit in a light and airy spot where you’ll remember to water it once a day and watch it grow. These mushrooms don’t need to be grown in the dark – kept indoors, in a kitchen is the perfect environment – giving them the right light and temperature to thrive.

Once you have grown your first flush of mushrooms, you can follow the instructions to attempt a second flush. Expect to harvest at least 600g of fresh mushrooms over a few harvests. These are culinary mushrooms and have no known hallucinogenic properties.

Upon receipt, both kits can be stored in the fridge, but the large no frills kit needs to be opened within three days, and used within one week. The dowels should be used within one month. A full set of instructions can be found inside your kit bag. All paper card can be recycled with your standard card recycling. The plastic bag can be cleaned and recycled with your soft plastic recycling. The outer bag and substrate block can be composted or disposed of along with your normal food waste.

How to care for Shiitake mushrooms:

You can store your 'no frills' Shiitake Mushroom kit in the fridge for up to one week, but when ready to start growing, open your kit with very clean scissors, carefully cutting the grow bag in a single diagonal line approx. 15-20cm (6-8in) from top to bottom.

Place your kit in a light position and out of direct sunlight and mist the opening of your kit twice a day with water. You can then expect to see your mushrooms popping up within 7 days, and they'll be ready to harvest when their caps flatten out.

For our outdoor log kit option, mushroom logs like to be kept moist and will need watering along with the rest of your plants throughout the year and especially throughout any dry spells. Keep your log protected from harsh winds and out of direct sunlight.

What's included:

Our large ‘no frills’ kit contains: approx. 2.5kg of pre-inoculated specialist substrate in a recyclable bag, each kit will grow from 600g-850g of fresh mushrooms over 1-2 harvests. Your kit will need misting during its growing phase, so if you don't have one already, please check out our excellent misters.

Our Log Dowel Growing Kit is designed for outdoor use, and for those wishing to grow mushrooms naturally using their own cut (unseasoned) logs. It contains: 30 inoculated timber dowels inside a sterilized plastic grow bag with filter patch, wax, sponge applicator and full set of instructions. We advise using fresh or recently felled (up to 8 weeks) hardwood logs up to 50cm in length (10-20cm in diameter) such as alder, oak, beech, birch, poplar or willow. We recommend avoiding sycamore, cherry and ash, conifers or soft woods. The logs should also have no signs of damage or other fungal growth. Please note that holes will need to be drilled into the logs to accommodate the dowels (we recommend an 8.5mm drill bit) and you should expect to see your first mushrooms from 9 months to 1 year after your logs have been inoculated. Once fruiting, you could be harvesting fresh mushrooms for approximately 3 years. Please note: It is not recommended to mix different strains of mushroom dowels within one log. If want to grow a variety of mushrooms, we advise allocating only one type per log.
